The hours argument

A day scholar travelling an hour each way loses roughly ten hours a week to transport, and arrives home with the day already spent. A resident student is a few minutes from the library, the laboratories and a study group in the evening.

This matters most in the semesters with heavy laboratory and project work, where evening access is the difference between finishing comfortably and finishing late.

The case for staying at home

  • Significantly lower cost, which for many families is decisive and entirely reasonable.
  • Family support, familiar food, and fewer adjustments in a demanding first year.
  • No hostel adjustment period, which some students find genuinely difficult.
  • Travel time is usable if you deliberately use it for reading or revision.

The case for the hostel

  • More usable hours, particularly in the evening.
  • Proximity to laboratories, library and project groups when work runs late.
  • Independence, which is part of what the degree is for.
  • A study environment among people doing the same subjects.

A practical middle path

Some students live at home for the first year while adjusting, then move into the hostel for the middle years when laboratory and project load peaks, and sometimes back out in the final year. There is no requirement to decide once and keep it.

What to check before committing

Visit the residence rather than relying on a description. Ask about room sharing, dining timings, security arrangements and study spaces. If you will be travelling, confirm that your town is on a college transport route and check the timings against the first and last teaching hours.
