Engineering semesters arrive in waves: quiet for three weeks, then assignments, internals and laboratory submissions all at once. Students who cope are rarely the ones working longest. They are the ones whose baseline does not collapse when a wave arrives.
The core idea
Protect two hours per subject per week, every week, from week one. That is modest and unimpressive, and it is also the entire method. Two hours a week across fourteen weeks is twenty-eight hours per subject before study leave begins, which is more than most students manage in total.
Building the week
- Block the fixed things first. Lectures, laboratories, travel, meals, sleep.
- Add one two-hour slot per subject in the gaps that remain. Same slot each week so it becomes automatic.
- Leave one flexible evening for whatever is on fire that week. Something always is.
- Keep one day genuinely off. Schedules without rest are abandoned by week five.
What to do in the two hours
Not re-reading. Work problems, write from memory and check, or attempt past-paper questions. Retrieval, not review. Twenty minutes of retrieval beats two hours of reading, which is why the two hours are enough when used properly.
Handling the waves
When three deadlines land in one week, the temptation is to abandon the schedule entirely. Do not. Shrink the slots to thirty minutes rather than dropping them. The habit is worth more than the hours, and a habit broken for two weeks is usually gone for the semester.
Hostellers and day scholars
Hostellers have evenings and should use them; the library and laboratories are open and nearby. Day scholars lose time to travel and should treat the bus as a slot: reading, revision cards or listening to recorded material turns dead time into one of the two hours.
What to take away
- Two protected hours per subject per week, from week one, is the whole method.
- Use the time for retrieval, not re-reading.
- In a heavy week, shrink the slots rather than dropping them.
- Day scholars should convert travel time into study time deliberately.
