A substantial number of students at any engineering college are eligible for support they do not claim. The schemes are not hidden, but they have deadlines and documentation requirements that reward being organised early.

The main routes

  • First Graduate. For students who are the first in their family to attend higher education. Requires a first graduate certificate from the revenue authority.
  • Community-based scholarships for BC, MBC, SC and ST students, administered by the state.
  • Minority scholarships for students from notified minority communities.
  • Merit scholarships based on academic performance.
  • Special category support for differently abled students and other specified categories.
  • Sports scholarships, subject to eligibility and level of participation.
  • Educational trust assistance offered through the institution.

Why claims fail

  1. Missing the window. Scholarship applications have their own deadlines, separate from admission.
  2. A certificate not obtained in time, usually the community, nativity or first graduate certificate.
  3. Name mismatches across mark sheets, Aadhaar and bank account. This is the single most common rejection and it takes time to correct.
  4. Bank account problems, typically an account not linked to Aadhaar or not active.
  5. Assuming ineligibility without checking. Ask the office rather than guessing.

What to do in your first week

Visit the admission or scholarship office and ask which schemes you may be eligible for. Then check that your name is spelled identically on every document, and that you have an active bank account in your own name linked to Aadhaar. Fixing a name mismatch takes weeks, and it is far easier in your first month than in your final year.

Education loans

Where scholarships do not cover the gap, the admission office provides guidance on education loans from nationalised and private banks, including the institutional documents banks ask for.
