Engineering admission to affiliated colleges in Tamil Nadu runs through a single state counselling process. It is procedural rather than mysterious, and understanding the sequence removes most of the anxiety around it.
How the cut-off is calculated
The engineering cut-off is computed from your twelfth standard marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, on a 200-mark scale. Mathematics contributes its marks halved out of 100, and Physics and Chemistry each contribute their marks quartered out of 50.
The arithmetic means Mathematics carries twice the weight of Physics or Chemistry individually. Students preparing for the cut-off should weight their revision accordingly.
Rank and random number
Candidates are ranked on the cut-off. Where cut-offs tie, tie-breaking rules apply. This is why two students with identical marks can receive different ranks, and it is not an error.
Choice filling, where most losses happen
This is the stage that rewards preparation and punishes haste. You list college and branch combinations in order of genuine preference. The system allots the highest choice available to you at your rank.
Two mistakes recur. The first is listing too few choices, which risks going unallotted in a round. The second is ordering by reputation rather than genuine preference, which produces an allotment the student does not actually want and will not take up.
Fill many choices, and order them honestly. A choice you would decline should not be above a choice you would accept.
Allotment and reporting
Allotment is released by round. On receiving an allotment you accept and report within the stated window, with the required documents. Missing the reporting window forfeits the seat, and this is an avoidable loss that happens every year.
Keep the document set ready in advance: tenth and twelfth mark sheets, transfer certificate, community certificate, nativity certificate and the rest. Assembling them during the reporting window is a needless risk.
