This question comes up in every admission conversation, usually phrased as which one is better. The short answer is that neither is better, and employers do not rank them. The longer answer is more useful.

Where the distinction comes from

Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Technology are both four-year undergraduate engineering degrees. Both are approved by AICTE. In Tamil Nadu both are awarded by the affiliating university on the same regulations, with the same credit structure and the same semester pattern.

The convention, loosely applied, is that B.E leans towards engineering science and B.Tech leans towards applied technology. In practice the naming often reflects the era in which a department was started rather than any difference in rigour.

Where it shows up at Maria

At Maria College of Engineering and Technology, the seven core branches are awarded as B.E, and Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence and Data Science are awarded as B.Tech. That reflects convention, not a difference in duration, affiliation or approval. All are four-year programmes affiliated to Anna University, Chennai and approved by AICTE.

Where it genuinely stops mattering

  • Campus recruitment. Eligibility criteria are written by branch and by marks, not by degree nomenclature.
  • Higher study. M.E, M.Tech and postgraduate admission abroad treat both as equivalent four-year engineering degrees.
  • Government recruitment. Notifications specify the discipline, not the letter of the award.
  • Professional registration and licensing, which follow the discipline.

What to look at instead

Compare the curriculum, the laboratories, and what the department actually does with its final-year projects. Those three tell you more about the next four years than the two letters on the certificate ever will.
