Improving Technical English Without Taking a Course

Communication is assessed constantly in placement and rarely taught directly. Many capable students underperform in interviews not because their English is poor but because they have never practised explaining technical things out loud.

What is actually being assessed

Not accent, not vocabulary size, not grammatical perfection. Whether you can take something complicated that you understand and make it clear to someone who was not there. That is a separate skill from knowing the material, and it is trainable quickly.

Five practices that use work you already have

1. Explain your project to someone outside your branch. If a nursing or MBA student can follow it, an interviewer will.
2. Write your laboratory records in full sentences. Not just readings and formulae. Explaining in writing is the cheapest available practice.
3. Read one technical article a week and summarise it in five sentences. Compression is the skill.
4. Present in seminars rather than avoiding them. The discomfort is the training.
5. Record yourself answering one interview question. Listen once. It is unpleasant and unusually effective.

The specific habits that cost marks

• Starting to answer before you have decided what the answer is. A two-second pause reads as considered, not slow.
• Filler words used to avoid silence. Silence is fine.
• Answering a different question than the one asked, usually because you prepared a different one.
• Saying yes to something you do not understand rather than asking for clarification. Asking reads as careful.

On saying you do not know

'I have not worked with that, but based on what I know of X I would expect it to behave like this' is a strong answer. Confident invention is the weakest one, and interviewers detect it immediately.
