These stages feel conversational, which leads students to under-prepare for them. Both are structured assessments with specific things being recorded.
What a group discussion measures
Not whether you were right, and certainly not whether you spoke most. Assessors are typically recording whether you contributed something of substance, whether you listened, whether you could disagree without being unpleasant, and whether you helped the group make progress.
- Speak early, within the first minute or two. It gets harder the longer you wait.
- Make one clear point at a time rather than a stream of half-formed ones.
- Build on others. 'Adding to what she said' scores better than talking over her.
- Do not dominate. Quantity is not the measure and is often marked down.
- Summarise if it stalls. Pulling the discussion back together is visible and valued.
What an HR round measures
Mostly whether you will join, whether you will stay, and whether you will be straightforward to work with. The questions are predictable because they are probing those three things.
- Tell me about yourself. Two minutes, professional, ending at why you are in this room.
- Why this company. Requires that you actually looked. Generic answers are obvious.
- Strengths and weaknesses. A real weakness with what you are doing about it. A disguised boast reads as evasion.
- Where do you see yourself. A direction, not a job title.
- Relocation and location. Answer honestly. An untrue yes surfaces within months.
On rehearsal
Prepare the substance, not the wording. Memorised answers are audible and they collapse on the first follow-up question. Know what you want to convey and let the sentences form in the room.
What to take away
- A group discussion measures contribution, listening and progress, not airtime.
- Speak in the first minute or two. It gets harder the longer you leave it.
- The HR round is about joining, staying and being easy to work with.
- Prepare substance, not wording. Memorised answers fail on the follow-up.
