Entrepreneurship is talked about constantly on campuses and attempted by very few students, partly because the gap between the language and the practice is wide. It is worth being concrete about what a technical degree does and does not prepare you for.

The degree gives you one half of what you need. The other half is not taught in it.

What the degree gives you

  • The ability to build the thing, which is a genuine advantage over founders who must hire for it.
  • Structured problem solving and the habit of checking whether a result is plausible.
  • A network of classmates with complementary technical skills.
  • Access to laboratories, equipment and faculty supervision at no cost, which you will never have this cheaply again.

What it does not

Nothing about customers. Engineering education optimises for the correct solution to a stated problem. Business turns on whether the problem is worth solving and whether anyone will pay. Those are different questions and the degree does not ask them.

Nor does it teach cash flow, pricing, or the specific discipline of talking to people who might buy from you before you build anything.

The least risky way to test an idea

  1. Use a mini project or final-year project to build the smallest version that works.
  2. Show it to twenty people who would actually use it, and record what they say rather than what you hoped.
  3. Change it or abandon it based on that, not on your attachment to the idea.
  4. Only then consider whether it deserves time after graduation.

This costs you nothing you were not already spending, and it is the closest thing to a free trial that exists.

A note on timing

Starting after a few years of employment is not a failure of nerve. You will understand an industry, have savings, and have seen how organisations actually work. A great many durable businesses are founded by people who worked first.

  • Your degree gives you the build capability and free access to laboratories and supervision.
  • It does not teach customers, pricing or cash flow. Those have to be learned separately.
  • Use project work to test an idea at no additional cost.
  • Founding after a few years of work is a legitimate and common route.
