Engineering Careers That Do Not Involve Coding

A student who dislikes programming often concludes they have chosen the wrong field. They have usually just been shown a narrow slice of it. A great deal of engineering work involves no meaningful programming at all.

Where those roles are

• Site and construction. Site engineer, project engineer, quality control, construction management. Coordination, judgement and responsibility, not code.
• Design and drafting. Structural design, mechanical design, building services. Software is used, but as a tool the way a drawing board once was.
• Manufacturing and production. Process engineering, quality, maintenance, industrial engineering.
• Testing and commissioning. Electrical testing, protection commissioning, thermal and mechanical testing.
• Estimation and contracts. Quantity surveying, tendering, cost control, contract management.
• Sales and technical support. Technical roles for equipment manufacturers, requiring domain knowledge and communication.

Which branches lead there

Civil, mechanical, automobile and electrical branches lead most directly to this work. So does construction engineering and management at postgraduate level. These are the branches where the deliverable is a physical thing or a physical system.

The honest caveat

Basic data literacy is becoming standard across all of these. Reading a spreadsheet properly, understanding a measurement series, knowing when a number is implausible: this is not programming and it is increasingly expected. Learning a little Python for handling data is worth the modest effort even if you never write software.
