What the route looks like

  1. Complete the three-year diploma at a polytechnic.
  2. Apply through the state lateral entry admission process for engineering degree programmes.
  3. Join the degree in semester three, alongside students who have completed two semesters.
  4. Complete the remaining three years and graduate with the same B.E or B.Tech as everyone else.

The honest difficulty

The first year you skipped contained mathematics, physics, chemistry and engineering fundamentals taught at degree level. Diploma courses cover related ground but with a practical emphasis and less mathematical depth.

So the real challenge of lateral entry is mathematical. Students who arrive and immediately work on engineering mathematics tend to be fine by the second semester. Students who assume their diploma covered it tend to struggle in exactly one place: the analytical subjects.

Diploma holders usually have more hands-on workshop and laboratory time than direct-entry students. In laboratory sessions, project work and internships this shows immediately, and it is a genuine advantage that direct-entry classmates do not have.
