More candidates are removed at the aptitude stage than at every interview stage combined. It is also the stage that responds most reliably to preparation, because the questions are patterned and the patterns repeat year after year.

It is the most preparable stage of the whole process and the one most students leave until last.

What is tested

  • Quantitative aptitude. Ratio and proportion, percentages, time and work, time speed and distance, averages, profit and loss, permutations and combinations, probability, number systems.
  • Logical reasoning. Series, arrangements, blood relations, syllogisms, data sufficiency, puzzles.
  • Verbal ability. Reading comprehension, sentence correction, vocabulary in context.
  • Technical or coding section for technical roles, usually data structures and basic algorithms.

Why cramming fails here

Aptitude is a speed skill. Knowing how to solve a problem is not enough; you need to solve it in about a minute, repeatedly, under pressure. Speed comes from repetition over months, and it cannot be compressed into a fortnight. This is the single most common miscalculation students make.

A schedule that works

  1. Semester five. Thirty minutes daily, one topic per week, accuracy first and ignore the clock.
  2. Semester six. Same daily half hour, now timed. Target a minute a question.
  3. Semester seven. Two full mock tests a week under exam conditions, and review every wrong answer until you know why.
  4. Placement season. Maintenance only. Keep the habit, do not start new topics.

Reviewing properly

The review matters more than the attempt. For every question you got wrong, write down whether it was a concept you did not know, a mistake you made in a hurry, or a question you should have skipped. Those three failures need three different fixes, and most students treat them all as the first.

On skipping

Most aptitude papers do not require a perfect score. Recognising quickly that a question will cost you three minutes, and moving on, is a skill worth practising deliberately.
