Sport at Maria is not decorative. The group runs its own Institute of Physical Education, which means there are people on site whose profession is coaching and who treat the grounds as a teaching facility rather than a lawn. Students across all eleven institutions benefit from that, whether or not they are studying physical education.
The campus carries open grounds for field games and hard courts for the indoor disciplines, used for departmental leagues, inter-college fixtures and the annual sports meet. Teams represent the institutions at university and inter-collegiate level, and the calendar is built so that the sports meet does not collide with assessment weeks.
For students who arrive already competing, sports scholarships are available subject to eligibility, and training commitments are accommodated alongside academic requirements. For everyone else, the grounds are simply open in the evening, which is the point.
Facilities are shared across the group, so a nursing student and an engineering student play on the same side.
