Should You Do an MBA After Engineering?

An MBA is the most common postgraduate step for engineering graduates who do not want a technical specialisation. It is also the one most often taken for the wrong reason, which is that the technical path felt hard and management sounded easier. It is not easier. It is different.

When it genuinely fits

• You are drawn to how organisations decide, price, sell and allocate resources, not only to how things are built.
• You want to run a business, your own or someone else's, and you lack the commercial vocabulary.
• You are already in a technical role and have hit a ceiling that is managerial rather than technical.
• You want to move into consulting, product, operations or finance, where the MBA is a recognised entry route.

When it does not

If you are doing it to avoid a job market, it will not help, because you will face the same market two years later with the same technical profile and more fees behind you.

If you enjoy engineering work and are good at it, an MBA can move you away from the thing you are best at. Technical depth compounds. Two years out of it is a real cost.

Immediately after graduation, or later?

Both are defensible. Going straight through keeps academic momentum and is simpler financially for many families. Working first gives you something to attach the coursework to: organisational behaviour means very little until you have sat in a badly run team.

If you go straight through, be deliberate about internships, because work experience is what your classmates will trade on later.
