Cybersecurity attracts students for good reasons and then confuses them, because the entry-level roles they expect largely do not exist. Security is a discipline built on top of other disciplines, and that shapes how you get in.
Why there are few entry-level security jobs
To secure a system you have to understand how it works. You cannot assess network security without understanding networks, or application security without having written applications. Organisations therefore hire people who already have that foundation and train them into security.
The realistic first roles
- Network engineer or network operations, then into network security.
- Software developer, then into application security or secure development.
- Systems or infrastructure administration, then into infrastructure security.
- Security operations centre analyst, which is one of the few genuine entry points and is a good one.
What to build during your degree
- Networking fundamentals, properly. Protocols, addressing, routing. This is the single highest-return topic.
- Operating systems and the command line, particularly Linux.
- One programming language well enough to write small tools, usually Python.
- A home laboratory using virtual machines, where you can break things safely and legally.
A warning worth stating plainly
Practise only on systems you own or on platforms explicitly built for it. Testing against systems without written authorisation is a criminal offence in India under the Information Technology Act, and a conviction ends the career you were trying to start. Every legitimate practitioner treats this line as absolute.
Which branches suit it
Computer science, information technology and CSE with AI and ML specialisation all lead here. Electronics and communication is a strong route into network and hardware security.
What to take away
- Security sits on top of another discipline. Build that foundation first.
- Networking fundamentals are the highest-return topic you can study for this field.
- Security operations analyst is one of the few genuine entry-level roles.
- Practise only on systems you own or on purpose-built platforms. The legal line is absolute.
